Obituary

Derrick DeYane Cleaves was born on October 8, 1973, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the union of Mack Cleaves, Jr. and the late Marilyn Randolph Terry. His spiritual foundation was rooted at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Mason, Tennessee, where he later served faithfully as the church drummer.

Affectionately known as "Redd" by family and friends, Derrick began his education in the Fayette County School District and completed it in the Shelby County School District. He graduated from Treadwell High School in Memphis, Tennessee, as a member of the Class of 1992.

Derrick went on to build a dedicated and respected career with the Shelby County Government, serving as a Highway Maintenance Supervisor. He approached his work with integrity, commitment, and enthusiasm—never taking his responsibilities lightly and always giving his best.

Outside of work, Derrick embraced the joys that made his life full. He loved spending time with family, cooking and grilling, skating, swimming, watching football, playing horseshoes, shooting pool, listening to music, and showcasing his skills as a Disc Jockey. With confidence and pride, he proclaimed himself the best—"DJ Redd."

On January 24, 2026, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, Derrick's earthly journey came to a peaceful close. He leaves behind a legacy of love as the devoted father of his daughters, Derricka Hughes and Ta'Shay Davis, and as a cherished father figure to his bonus children, Ronald Bradford and Tanisha Bradford, along with their mother, lifelong friend and former wife, LaTonya Cleaves.

Derrick is also survived by his brothers Maurice Cleaves, LaDetric Terry, and DeMarco Terry; and his beloved aunts and uncles Jackie Drew, Glenda Hunter, Tiffany Randolph, Angela Randolph, and King Lance. He leaves ten grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the laughter, memories, and love he shared so generously.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Randolph (Charlie) Terry; grandparents Melvana Randolph, Louis Randolph, Pearlie Mae Cleaves, and Mack Edwards Cleaves, Sr.; uncles Donald "Duck" Randolph, Martin Hunter, and Dewayne Randolph; aunt Louvenia Lance; and mother‑in‑law Maxine Dotson.
Derrick's journey was one worth living, and his impact will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
