Evangelist Maxine
Johnson Mason
Jun 21, 1951 — Jan 14, 2026
The final chapter of Maxine Johnson Mason's life was written on January 14, 2026, at her home in Gallaway, Tennessee. She entered this world as Maxine Johnson on June 21, 1951, in Cleveland, Ohio, born to the loving of Waddell and Ollie Cooper Johnson.
Reared in a home rooted in faith, Maxine accepted Christ as her personal Savior and Lord, later affirming her commitment through baptism at Cedar Grove M.B. Church in Mason, Tennessee. She would go on to unite with St. Matthew M.B. Church and Greenleaf Community Church, where she served faithfully in the Mothers' Ministry and offered her gifts wherever they were needed.
Maxine received her education through the Fayette County School District, graduating from W.P. Ware High School before continuing her studies at State Technical Institute at Memphis. She later accepted her call to ministry at Greenleaf Community Church. During her teenage years, Maxine met the love of her life, Anderson Mason, and the two were united in marriage in August 1971. Their union was blessed with three children: the late Meiko D. Johnson, Denesicia (Derek) Rivers of Arlington, Tennessee, and Ananias (ChaKia) Mason of Oakland, Tennessee.
Throughout her professional journey, she served as a substitute teacher and later worked at Medgen (formerly Vollrath) as a Quality Inspector and Relief Operator. Whether at home surrounded by family or at work among colleagues, Maxine's presence filled every space with laughter, warmth, and joy. Affectionately known as "Mack," she was outspoken in the most genuine and heartfelt way—her "keep it real" spirit was one of her most cherished qualities.
In her leisure time, Maxine found her greatest joy in being with her family—her children and grandchildren, whom she adored. She also enjoyed shopping and traveling, creating memories that will forever live in the hearts of those she loved.
In addition to her devoted husband and children, Maxine leaves to honor her life, love, and legacy her siblings: Shirley (Clinton) Teamer, Nancy (Robert) Fields, and Gloria Brewer, all of Gallaway, TN; Pearleane Wherry of Albuquerque, NM; and Linda Johnson, Gloria Johnson, Jackie Wilson, Waddell Johnson, and Michael Johnson, all of Nashville, TN. She was a proud grandmother to Deruis, Kayla, Kennedi, and DeMya, and a delighted great-grandmother to Kaliyah and Jullion. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings: Cecil Johnson, Rickey Johnson, Willie Jean Whitmore Steele, Shelia Johnson, Elaine Johnson, and Tommy.
