Herman Lichester Brooks,91,"Sonny" was born to the union of Horace Evy and Minnie Joe Seymour Brooks on January 9, 1934. In his late adulthood, Herman accepted Christ as his personal Savior and Lord under the leadership of the late Elder Clarence Randle of Powerhouse Church of God in Christ. His passion for salvation was unwavering, and he eagerly shared the gospel with anyone willing to listen, spreading the message of faith to family and friends alike.
In his leisure time, before losing his sight, Herman found joy in farming, gardening, hunting, and playing baseball, always surrounded by loved ones. Even after his vision faded, his spirit remained bright.
Herman L. Brooks departed this life on Monday February 17, 2025. He leaves behind a loving legacy through his children, Mae Hunt, Melvin Hines, Carolyn Hodge, Herman (Janice) Brooks Jr., Roy Chester Brooks, Sr., Terry (Juanita) Brooks, Brian (Iris) Brooks, Angela Brooks-Seaberry, Latonia Brooks (Demetrious Sr.) Williams, Demetria (Jason) Jones, and Nicholas Brooks. He is also survived by a granddaughter he raised as his own, Nephraterri (Christopher Sr.) Campbell, along with 23 additional grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, each of whom he loved deeply. His siblings, Barbara Brooks of Brownsville, Tennessee; Mildred (Garland) Sharp of Oakridge, Tennessee; and Minnie V. Brooks of Winfield, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Martha Irving and Susie Taylor both of Elkhart, Indiana; Dorothy Lawson of Memphis, Tennessee, and Faye Edwards, Hattie Bell Murphy (Bob) Burnham; brothers-in-law, Walter "Buck" Murphy and Stanley Murphy both of Detroit, Michigan; and host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Herman was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Rena Mae Murphy Brooks; his parents, Horace and Minnie Brooks; three children, Corey Brooks, Monica Brooks, and Homer "Kemp" Randle; and his sister, Joyce Marie Brooks.
