Joe "JT"
Thompson
Dec 17, 1948 — May 9, 2026
Joe “JT” Thompson transitioned peacefully on May 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 17, 1948, Joe grew up with a deep love for the open countryside and a lifelong passion for horses.
Known affectionately as “JT”, he found joy from an early age in saddling, riding, and shoeing horses. He spent countless hours on trails and across open fields, guided by a spirited nature and a remarkable gift for understanding the animals he loved. Friends and family often said that “JT” didn’t just ride horses—he understood them. His calm presence could settle even the most spirited horse, a talent that left many in awe. He was also a proud member of the Golden Riders Club.
Over the years, “JT” shared his love of riding with his children, grandchildren, and anyone eager to learn, believing wholeheartedly that time spent with a horse was truly “time well spent.”
Beyond the stables, Joe dedicated 30 years of service to the Arlington Development Center and later served with the Fayette County Deputy Sheriff’s Office until his retirement.
Joe “JT” Thompson will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves to cherish his life, love, and spirit his wife of 56 years, Shirley Williams Thompson of Mason, TN; his four sons—John Fredrick Thompson of Mason, TN; Darrick L. Thompsonof Memphis, TN; Phedorious A. Thompson of Somerville, TN; and Christopher “Bubba” Thompson of Somerville, TN—and one daughter, Lisa Brown of Memphis, TN.
“JT” was the son of the late Sloan and Bertha Fields Thompson. He was the brother of Callie Francis (Moses) Dupree of Alabama, and was preceded in death by Larkie Mae Harville, Ethel B. Thompson, Florence Neal, Odessa Thompson, and John Ellis Thompson. He was the proud grandfather of 18 grandchildren and 9 great‑grandchildren. His love extended to many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever remember the moments shared with him.
A man of faith, Joe accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Sinai MB Church. His relationship with Christ was evident in the way he lived—steadfast, humble, and an example to his family. He was educated in the Fayette County School District and graduated from WP Ware High School.
