Swazoo
Claybon, Sr.
Jul 26, 1934 — Jun 2, 2026
Swazoo Claybon was born on July 26, 1934, in Tipton County, Tennessee, to the late Ledger Mae Terry Claybon and Adrian Claybon. As the eldest of twelve children, he developed the compassion, leadership, and servant's heart that would define his life.
A proud graduate of Gailor High School's Class of 1953, Swazoo earned his degree from Tennessee State University in 1961 and remained a devoted supporter as a Life Member of the TSU National Alumni Association.
A man of deep faith, Swazoo was a lifelong member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, where he was confirmed on September 26, 1948. His commitment to Christ guided his life of service to family, community, and country.
Swazoo proudly served eight years in the United States Army, including active duty from 1954 to 1957 during the Korean Conflict, before completing his service in the Army Reserve. He also served his community as a ballot box judge, blood donor, and engaged citizen.
Education was one of his greatest callings. Before retiring from the Tipton County School System on May 28, 1991, he served in leadership roles at every level of education. Known for his warmth, humor, and encouragement, he made a lasting impact on generations of students. He often shared his belief that true service means helping those who may not yet know they need help.
In 1957, Swazoo married his beloved wife, Dorothy Mae Johnson Claybon. Together they were blessed with four children: Palace (Donald) LaVonne, Swazoo (Lavonnie) Jr., Wanda Kay (Rodney), and Valerie Lynn, who preceded him in death. He also leaves a legacy through his six grandchildren, two grandsons-in-law, four great-grandchildren, and countless former students, friends, and colleagues whose lives were touched by his kindness.
Swazoo Claybon lived a life marked by faith, humility, service, and love. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the students he inspired, and the community he helped uplift.
